GROVE PIECE 2016
Over 11 days, make a rotation around a golden tree,
(The Golden Center of Time)
Each day take one step to the right,
Draw what is in front of you
Notice in particular the eyes of the trees
Note the rhythm of the forest
Note rhythms you hear and bird calls

St. George’s Residency, 2018

Moving from NYC to Vancouver in 2016, I found that being in the big city had warped my sense of time. I wanted to stop rushing, and to find my own sense of time. I did this in the forest, in Pacific Spirit Park next to the school. Over many days, drawing the trees, my mind and spirit re-adjusted..

Homma Elementary, 2020

Asked to create a mural for a quiet inner courtyard in the school, I followed the same instructions, transcribing the grove over 13 days onto the walls of the school. I wrote a set of questions for the children. “How does a tree tell time? A stone? A snail?”

Grove Piece 2018, Homma Elementary
Transcribe this Piece each day onto the walls of the inner courtyard at Tomekichi Homma Elementary School over the same number of days, making the same rotation. Write a series of questions about time and the forest for the children.
