The Lorraine Mirror

Between 2013 and 2015 in Los Angeles and New York, I worked with the black mirror -- drawing in the landscape, taking photographs in it, looking for the "smoked" tonality of the Lorraine Mirror in museum collections and historic paintings. The black mirror of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries was both a divining tool used by seers and an optical tool used by artists, including Courbet, Corot, Manet, Sutherland, and Matisse.

The works here are re-imagined elements of Courbet paintings (trees, rocks, millponds), a kind of divining happens, as though finding a secret place in Courbet's work.
